Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes, sliced thinly
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or blend)
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk (skim or dairy alternative)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder (optional)
  • Olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent (3 to 4 minutes).
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned (6 to 8 minutes). Drain excess fat.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder. Whisk until smooth.
  4. In an oiled 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the beef mixture, and half of the creamy soup mixture. Repeat once more.
  5. Top with shredded cheese, cover with foil, and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  6. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure potato slices are even for uniform cooking. Adding fresh herbs before serving enhances flavor.
