Description
French Onion Soup is a cozy, comforting dish with caramelized onions, beef broth, gooey melted cheese, and crunchy baguette slices. Perfect for family gatherings, date nights, or a warm weeknight meal!
Ingredients
4 large onions, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon sugar
4 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Baguette slices
Gruyere cheese, grated
Instructions
1. In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sugar, cooking 30 minutes until caramelized, stirring occasionally.
2. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
3. Slowly add beef broth, stirring to combine. Simmer 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Preheat broiler. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top with a baguette slice and Gruyere cheese. Broil until cheese is bubbly and golden.
5. Serve hot and enjoy.
Notes
Caramelize onions longer for deeper flavor.
Substitute Gruyere with Swiss or mozzarella.
Add thyme or bay leaves while simmering for extra depth.
Make ahead: prepare soup base, then broil with bread and cheese when ready.
Variation: Add heavy cream before serving for a creamy version, or mushrooms for an earthy twist.
