How to Make Mozzarella Cheese Skulls

  • Author: Emma
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

Mozzarella Cheese Skulls are a spooky, fun twist on homemade mozzarella! Perfect for Halloween parties or themed gatherings, these skull-shaped cheeses are creamy, stretchy, and surprisingly easy to make. They’ll wow your guests while giving you a chance to get creative in the kitchen!

Ingredients

Scale

1 gallon whole milk

1/4 tsp liquid rennet

1/4 cup white vinegar

1 tsp salt

Ice water

Instructions

1. Heat the milk in a large pot over medium heat until it reaches 190°F (use a thermometer for accuracy).

2. Remove from heat and stir in white vinegar. Let sit 5 minutes to form curds.

3. Line a colander with cheesecloth and carefully pour in the mixture to separate curds from whey.

4. Drain curds for 15–20 minutes to remove excess liquid.

5. Transfer curds to a bowl, sprinkle with salt, and knead until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).

6. Heat a separate pot of water to 190°F. Dip portions of cheese into hot water until pliable.

7. Shape the softened cheese into skulls with clean hands.

8. Quickly transfer skulls into ice water to cool and set their shape.

9. Serve fresh or refrigerate until ready to enjoy.

Notes

Best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored up to 3 days in the fridge.

Whole milk produces the creamiest texture, but low-fat milk works too.

For added flavor, knead in herbs like basil or garlic powder.

Kids can help shape the skulls—it’s a fun family kitchen activity!
