Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup boiling water
Red food coloring
Chocolate frosting
Maraschino cherries
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
3. Add vegetable oil, vanilla, and buttermilk; mix until smooth.
4. Stir in boiling water gradually until well combined.
5. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full with batter.
6. Bake 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool completely.
7. Cut a small circle from the top of each cupcake to create a “bite” hole.
8. Fill the hole with red food coloring or jam, then top with chocolate frosting.
9. Place a maraschino cherry on top to resemble a bloody bite.
