Description

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle yeast over warm water and add sugar. Let sit until foamy (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in yeast mixture and melted butter, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-1.5 hours until doubled.
  4. Punch down the dough, divide into 8 portions, and roll each into an 18-inch rope. Shape into pretzels.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Boil 10 cups of water and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly and serve warm.

Notes

Experiment with toppings and shapes! For a healthier option, use whole wheat flour.
