Description

A cozy family dinner featuring crispy pretzel crusted chicken served with a rich cheddar mustard sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 cups crushed pretzels (about 6 ounces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for sauce)
  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (for sauce)
  • 1/2 tablespoon yellow mustard (for sauce)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (for sauce)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for sauce)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
  • Extra crushed pretzels for texture

Instructions

  1. Flatten the chicken breasts and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Set up dredging station with flour, egg mixture (eggs and Dijon), and crushed pretzels mixed with garlic and smoked paprika.
  3. Dredge each chicken breast in flour, dip into the egg mixture, then coat with pretzels.
  4. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Place coated chicken on the baking sheet, brush with olive oil or melted butter, and bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway.
  6. While chicken is baking, melt butter in a saucepan, add flour to create a roux, then whisk in milk until thickened.
  7. Add Dijon and yellow mustard to the sauce, then stir in cheddar cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Once chicken is cooked through (internal temperature 165°F), serve topped with cheddar mustard sauce, garnished with parsley and extra crushed pretzels.

Notes

Consider double-dipping the chicken for extra crunch. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to three days or frozen for three months.
