Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • Red food coloring (natural alternative)
  • Sprinkles or icing for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, then gradually mix in the dry mixture.
  4. Divide the dough, add red food coloring to one half, then shape both into logs and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and slice the chilled dough into 1/4 inch thick pieces.
  6. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out cookies and bake for 8-10 minutes until golden.
  7. Cool the cookies and decorate as desired.
